LilaF  > Poetry > Haiku Holiday 2008
The North Carolina Haiku Society hosted the 29th annual Haiku Holiday on Saturday April 26, 2008, at Bolin Brook Farm outside of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA. Here are some photos from the morning session, before the ginko and the afternoon workshops. The Archives section of the NCHS Web site has links to descriptions of past Haiku Holidays, including this one.

LilaF > Honored guest Michiko K. Hopkins presents an antique shikishi to Roberta. A shikishi is a paper board, covered with gold or silver metallic, then covered with a sheer protective paper, with edges of the board finished in gold trim. Michico also created calligraphic versions (in English and in Japanese kanjii) of two of Roberta's haiku. One of these haiku won the grand prize in the Foreign Language Category of the 10th International Kusamakura Haiku Competition, the highlight of which was a trip to Kumamoto, Japan. The other haiku won runner-up in the same competition the following year.

LilaF > Sylvia Freeman introduces Fleur-de-Lisa, an acappella group from Durham, North Carolina. The group recently recorded Willow Songs, a CD of songs based on haiku from Beneath the Willow Tree, an anthology of haiku by members of the North Carolina Haiku Society. We think that Fleur-de-Lisa is one of the first, if not the first, acappella groups to feature a performance of haiku in English. From left to right, we have Andie Piddington, Deborah Stewart, Sylvia Freeman, and Sarah Shrunk.
