  • Honored guest Michiko K. Hopkins presents an antique shikishi to Roberta. A shikishi is a paper board, covered with gold or silver metallic, then covered with a sheer protective paper, with edges of the board finished in gold trim. Michico also created calligraphic versions (in English and in Japanese kanjii) of two of Roberta's haiku. One of these haiku won the grand prize in the Foreign Language Category of the 10th International Kusamakura Haiku Competition, the highlight of which was a trip to Kumamoto, Japan. The other haiku won runner-up in the same competition the following year.

  • Sylvia Freeman introduces Fleur-de-Lisa, an acappella group from Durham, North Carolina. The group recently recorded Willow Songs, a CD of songs based on haiku from Beneath the Willow Tree, an anthology of haiku by members of the North Carolina Haiku Society. We think that Fleur-de-Lisa is one of the first, if not the first, acappella groups to feature a performance of haiku in English. From left to right, we have Andie Piddington, Deborah Stewart, Sylvia Freeman, and Sarah Shrunk.

  • Many haiku by the Japanese masters mention the Doll Festival or Girl's Day. The Japanese custom is display the dolls during the month of March only, and the dolls are rarely shown outside of the home. So we are especially grateful that Michiko agreed to bring four of her Hina dolls for display at Haiku Holiday at the end of April.

This was only the second time in Michico's life that her dolls had been displayed outside of her home. Some of the dolls seen here are almost 150 years old.
